Ilias LaLaounis is one of my favorite jewers of all time.
He was born in athens in the 20s, took over his family goldsmith / watchmaking business during ww2 in the 40s. Once Athens was recovering from the war in the 50s, he began to fall in love with ancient greek artifacts and studying their likeness. he dedicated his life to breathing their history and art into his work, and later to other cultures inspiring his work spanning from prehistoric to Minoan art, from Persian to Byzantine, from Chinese art to the art of the Tudors.
He employed many of their age old techniques such as granulation, filigree, hand-weaving and hand-hammering while pursuing the best of modern technology.
