Mourning lockets in the 19th century were designed to hold memory in a physical way, often containing hair, portraits, or small relics. French examples frequently pushed this idea further through material, creating pieces that balanced opacity and transparency. Rock crystal, a clear form of quartz, was used as a viewing window, allowing the contents inside to remain visible while still protected.

The use of amethyst on the reverse adds another layer of meaning and rarity. Amethyst was associated with clarity of mind, protection, and spiritual grounding, often used in more personal or symbolic jewelry. The stone here, cut large and softly translucent, acts almost as a veil. It obscures rather than reveals, holding what is inside in a more private way.
